About Field Trip Projects

Tra Bouscaren is a post-disciplinary artist focused on American spectacle at the crossroads of waste culture and the surveillance state.

Professor Bouscaren’s work has been featured at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, the National Museum of Art in Addis Ababa, Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in Seoul, Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, Victor I Fils Gallery in Madrid, The Wrong Biennale, Fort Mason Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Greenleaf Gallery in Los Angeles, San Diego Art Institute, Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia, and Lincoln Center in New York. In the fall of 2019, Bouscaren will open a solo exhibition at the Mattress Factory alongside permanent installations by Yayoi Kusama and James Turrell.

Bouscaren has presented and/or published his practice-based research at MOCA Tucson, the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, Stony Brook University Conference on Art and Philosophy, NPR Radio, Studies In Control Societies Journal, Ildo Lobo Center for Culture in Praia, the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts, and the CAA Conference in Los Angeles, where he Co-Chaired a panel with Prof. Derek Curry titled, “Aesthetics and Control: Artists Respond to the Surveillance Apparatus”.

Bouscaren builds projects with a broad array of visual artists, performers, hackers, musicians, and scholars. His recent collaboration partners include new media activist Grayson Earle, installation artist John Schlesinger, culture-jamming icons Negativland, SFAI Professor Jeremy Morgan, border activist Steve Hise, Biologist Ross Buchan, Flam Chen Circus, the West African dance company Raiz de Polon, and the Bay Area social-practice focused Collective Action Studio.

Prior to joining the faculty at FSU, Tra Bouscaren has taught at the University of Arizona, the University of California at Santa Cruz, the University of Texas at El Paso, SUNY Buffalo, the University of Pennsylvania, and the National Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki.
